Aliyah

What is Aliyah and when did it start?

How has Aliyah fulfilled prophetic scripture and why is it so important?

What other prophetic events are directly linked to Aliyah?

What are the 64 scriptures related to Aliyah?

How our family was led to make Aliyah and how we are involved in it now?

What is Aliyah?

When G-d repeats Himself and says something more than once, we want to take note, because it clearly concerns something of special importance to Him.

G-d, in His Word, declared His intention to bring His people home from all the nations where they were scattered 64 TIMES!

This return is called “Aliyah” – the physical return of the Jews to their land, the restoration of that land and the rebuilding of the Jewish nation in the land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael).

Aliyah” is the Hebrew word for “ascent,” coming from the same Hebrew root as the word “la-alot” (“to ascend”) or “ma-alot,” as in the “Psalms of Ascent” (Psalms 120-134) which were recited by pilgrims on their way up to Jerusalem for the great feasts.

Today, in modern Hebrew, Aliyah is used to refer to Jewish persons returning home to their Promised Land in Israel from the nations where they have been scattered. He or she is going “Up to Zion,” fulfilling the many prophecies in G-d’s Word.

“This is what the Sovereign L-RD says: I will gather you from the nations and bring you back from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you back the land of Israel again.”

(Ezekiel 11:17)

“And I will bring my people Israel back from exile. They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.”

(Amos 9:14)

The History of Aliyah

If we look at the history of the last 2,000 years, from a Biblical perspective, clearly the event of the greatest historic and prophetic significance was the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Yeshua haMashiach). The second most significant event was surely what took place on the Day of Pentecost (Shavuot) when the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) fell on the disciples and the church (kehilah) was born. We believe the third most significant event has been the return of the Jewish people to their land—Aliyahforetold in G-d’s Word 64 times.

The modern movement of Aliyah began in 1881, accelerated with the First Zionist Congress in 1897 and the Balfour Declaration of 1917. It began to realize its full potential when the nation of Israel was reborn in 1948 and Jerusalem was re-united under Jewish control in 1967.

Today, over 1/3 of all the world’s Jews live in Israel, more than any other country in the world. In spite of incredible opposition, challenges and difficulties, Israel is today a strong and prosperous country, and Aliyah continues to this day.

The 64 prophecies are being miraculously fulfilled before our very eyes!

See how! Continue to The Miracle of Aliyah below.

The Miracle of Aliyah

In the 17th century, Louis XIV asked Blaise Pascal, the great French enlightenment philosopher, to give him proof of the supernatural. Pascal answered simply, “Why, the Jews, your Majesty – the Jews.” Can you imagine what he’d say if he had seen the Jews having miraculously returned to Israel?

Jewish history is, indeed, a supernatural phenomenon. Think about this: what other people group have been separated from their land for nearly 2,000 years and still exist as a people? What other people have ever returned to their ancient homeland, reestablished their state, and revived their ancient language?

As if all this weren’t miraculous enough, the Jewish people have been the most persecuted people on the face of the earth, and have been few in number, yet G-d still somehow accomplished these things.

These occurrences are unprecedented in human history, and even violate all laws of human history. Yet G-d predicted them from the beginning – in detail – over 2,400 years ago in the Scriptures. And now these Scriptures are being fulfilled before our very eyes, and in miraculous ways!

G-d’s Promises

  & Their Fulfillment

G-d promised that he would bring the Jewish people back to Israel from “all the nations,” “out of all the peoples,” from the “north, west, south, and east,” and from the “ends of the earth” (Isa. 11:12; see other Scriptures below).
Jews have indeed returned, not just from one nation or region, but from all around the world.
No other single nation in all of history (especially one so small) has been composed of such a diverse population as modern Israel.
G-d proclaimed that the state of Israel would be “born in a day” (Isa. 66:7-8).
In Isaiah’s day, nations were never “born in a day” – it took decades and even centuries before a family became large enough to be considered a “nation.”
But this could be uniquely fulfilled in the modern nation-state of Israel, as on May 14, 1948 – on one, specific day – Israel was reborn.
G-d declared that the language of Hebrew would be revived (Zeph. 3:9).
No other ancient and dead language has ever been revived, except for Hebrew.
He foretold that the land would become completely desolate while we were dispersed (Ezek. 6:14).
Mark Twain described the land in 1867 as: “a desolate country…given over wholly to weeds,” “a desolation…hardly a tree or shrub anywhere…. We never saw a human being on the whole route.”[1]
But after we returned, He promised to make the desert “blossom” (Isa. 35:1).
People would say of Israel: “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited” (Ezek. 36:35).
Historians recognize what happened in Israel as an “agricultural miracle.” Did you know that Israel is the only country in the world that had a net gain of trees in the 20th century – and this in an area considered mainly desert?
G-d promised to “give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen” (Isa. 43:19-20).
According to charts compiled by a professional meteorologist for the British Royal Air Force,[2] the rain increased over 2.5 times its original level from the beginning of Zionism until the mid-20th century. It didn’t do so evenly, but in steps, corresponding exactly to each new wave of Aliyah.
And when was the highest rainfall for the entire period? 1948! G-d was supernaturally providing for His people and showing them His favor again.
As David Ben Gurion, the first prime minister of the State of Israel, stated, “A Jew who does not believe in miracles is not a realist.”
He said that he would deliver His people even though many nations would seek to destroy them after they returned (Mic. 4:11-13).
Israel is surrounded by 21 hostile Arab nations that comprise 300 times its land mass, and yet we’ve won every major war since 1948. Israeli soldiers and civilians – many of whom are secular Jews – have reported thousands of miracles that occurred in the midst of these wars.
When the Jewish people, after nearly 2,000 years, finally regained access to the Western Wall in 1967, it was obvious to everyone that it was the hand of G-d at work. Even Moshe Dayan, a secular Jew and Minister of Defense in the 1967 war, quoted Psalm 118:23 to describe this miracle, “This is from G-d. It is wondrous in our eyes.”
G-d predicted that many Jews would return to Israel from the Middle East due to persecution.
“They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, and they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt…” (Isaiah 27:13).
When the nation of Israel was established, the surrounding Arab nations, including Egypt and the modern-day region equivalent to Assyria, threatened the lives of their Jewish populations, and forced approximately 820,000 of them to flee to Israel.[3]
G-d also declared that Gentiles would help bring the Jewish people back home.
Isaiah 49:22 states, “See, I will beckon to the Gentiles, I will lift up my banner to the peoples; they will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their shoulders.”

Hundreds of thousands of Jews have indeed returned due to the help of Evangelical Christians.
G-d said that he would cause us to prosper in Israel, and that “The wealth of the nations will come to you” (Isa. 60:4-5).
Israel has indeed received the wealth of the nations in investment.
More Israeli companies are listed on the NASDAQ than those of Europe, China, and India combined! Israel attracts 30 times more venture capital per person than Europe.[4]

Prophetic Events Linked to Aliyah

Much more is involved in Aliyah than the physical return of the Jews, the restoration of the land and the rebirth of the nation.

In the 64 passages of Scripture proclaiming G-d’s intention to bring His people home, 7 other amazing things are described which happen in conjunction with Aliyah.

 1. SPIRITUAL RESTORATION OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE

Will there be a ‘great Jewish revival’ when “All Israel will be saved”? G-d’s Word says ‘YES!’ and that it happens AFTER they return to the Land.

For example we see in Ezekiel 36:24-26: “For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. THEN will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”

The restoration happens both in Israel and outside of Israel, in conjunction with Aliyah.
This theme is stated 14 times in Scripture:
  1. Jeremiah 23:3-6
  2. Jeremiah 24:4-7
  3. Jeremiah 32:37-41
  4. Jeremiah 33:7-9
  5. Jeremiah 50:1-5
  6. Ezekiel 11:14-20
  7. Ezekiel 20:40- 42
  8. Ezekiel 28:25-26
  9. Ezekiel 36:22-28
  10. Ezekiel 37:21-28
  11. Ezekiel 39:25-29
  12. Zechariah 8:7-8
  13. Zechariah 10:8-12
  14. Joel 2:17-18, 27-32

2. POURING OUT OF G-D’S SPIRIT ON ISRAEL AND ON THE NATIONS

Will G-d pour out His Spirit on Israel and on all flesh? YES! and it happens in conjunction with the return of His people to their Land. We see an example in Joel 2:28-29; 3:1: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit… For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem…”
This theme is stated 4 times in Scripture:
  1. Ezekiel 37:5,6,8,9,10,14
  2. Ezekiel 39:25-29
  3. Zechariah 12:10
  4. Joel 2:17-18, 2:27–3:2.

3. WORLDWIDE SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

Do G-d’s plans for the earth include a worldwide spiritual awakening? YES! And it comes as a response to Aliyah!

For example, in Jeremiah 33:7, 9 we see: “And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first… And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honor before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.”

This theme is stated 8 times in Scripture:
  1. Jeremiah 33:7-9
  2. Ezekiel 20:40-42
  3. Ezekiel 28:25-26
  4. Ezekiel 36:22- 29
  5. Ezekiel 37:21-28
  6. Ezekiel 39:25-29
  7. Zephaniah 3:19- 20
  8. Zechariah 8:20-23
    See also Romans 11:1, 11-12, 15

4. RETURN OF JESUS CHRIST (YESHUA HAMASHIACH) TO EARTH

Is the very return to Earth of our Messiah preceded by Aliyah? Is the return of the people of Israel to their Promised Land a pre-condition to His return? YES!

We see this theme developed clearly in Jeremiah 23:3, 5-6: “And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase… Behold, the days come, saith the L-RD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE L-RD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

This theme is stated 4 times in Scripture:
  1. Jeremiah 23:3-6
  2. Ezekiel 37:21-28
  3. Micah 2:12-13
  4. Micah 4:6-7
    see also Zechariah 12:1-2, 10 and Zechariah 14:2-4a, 5b

5. ROLE OF THE GENTILES

Does G-d have a role for the Gentiles in this amazing prophetic process of Aliyah? YES!

A clear example can be seen in Isaiah 49:22: “Thus saith the L-rd G-D, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.”

This theme is stated 8 times in Scripture:
  1. Isaiah 11:11-12
  2. Isaiah 14:1-2
  3. Isaiah 43: 5-6
  4. Isaiah 49:22- 23
  5. Isaiah 60:4-5
  6. Isaiah 60:8-9
  7. Isaiah 61:4-7
  8. Jeremiah 16:14-16

6. JUDAH AND ISRAEL

Is G-d bringing back only the Jews (descendants of the southern Kingdom of Judah)? What about the Israelites (descendants from the northern Kingdom of Israel–the so-called “Lost Tribes”)? Whenever the names “Judah” and “Israel” appear side-by-side in Scripture, “Israel” refers to the northern kingdom. In many passages, the L-rd indicates that He is also bringing back the Israelites (the true genealogical descendants of those northern tribes).

For example, in Jeremiah 3:18: “In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.” The tribes of Manassah and Dan have already started to return.

This theme is stated 12 times in Scripture:
  1. Isaiah 11:11-12
  2. Jeremiah 3:14-18
  3. Jeremiah 23:5-8
  4. Jeremiah 30:1-3
  5. Jeremiah 30:4-11
  6. Jeremiah 31:8-9
  7. Jeremiah 31:18-22
  8. Jeremiah 33:7-9
  9. Jeremiah 50:1-5
  10. Jeremiah 50:17-20
  11. Ezekiel 37:15-28
  12. Zechariah 10:6-12

7. THE VALLEY OF DRY BONES

In Ezekiel 37:1-14, the L-rd takes the prophet into “the valley of dry bones” and has him pray over the dead bones. They are at first physically resurrected; then they are spiritually resurrected. We can’t help being reminded of the physical restoration of the people of Israel to their Promised Land, which is followed by a spiritual restoration.

In verse 12, He says: “Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the L-rd G-D; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.” This is repeated again in verse 21. In fact, the whole of Ezekiel 37 is clearly about Aliyah!

This picture of Aliyah takes place in “THE valley”–a specific valley. Could it be the Jordan Valley?

Historically, many of the building blocks of the nation of Israel began in the Jordan Valley, including the kibbutz, the moshav, the Histadrut (the labor organization which represented 85% of the workers and owned 25% of the industry), the first health fund, the first department store, the largest bank, the largest construction company and much, much, more. Also, many Biblical events took place in the Jordan Valley, including Moses’ looking into the Promised Land; the entry of Joshua and the children of Israel into the Land; the immersion of Jesus (Yeshua) and the start of His ministry; the center of Jesus’ (Yeshua’s) ministry and much more.

If so much happened here in Biblical times, and in a very real sense the modern physical restoration of the people and nation of Israel began here, is it possible that the Spiritual restoration—the great Jewish revival when “All Israel will be saved”—will also begin here?

Our Aliyah Story

AUGUST 9, 2002 A NIGHT OF TERROR

After a pleasant bike ride to the German border town of Furth am Wald, we were delighted to come upon a Knight Festival.  Villagers were dressed as medieval knights and maids with their horses bedecked in colorful ornaments.  Then we rode our bikes to the Czech border hoping to find lodging there.  Instead we discovered that all hotels in the area were booked because of the Knight Festival.  Well, the road was wide and although it was almost dark, we lit the Shabbat candles, sang the Sh’ma, blew the shofar and continued to ride our bikes towards Prague.

However after a short time, the highway narrowed into a dangerously curved two-lane strip.  The road’s shoulders disappeared and even riding the white line along the road’s edge proved treacherous as trucks approached from both directions at high speed, their bright lights blinding us and causing us to repeatedly veer off the road into steep ravines, some over four feet deep.  Muddy, scraped and bleeding, sometimes crying, we prayed throughout this terrifying ordeal.  I kept falling behind so Richard tried to pull me with his bike, but since I don’t see well at night, it was frightening for me to avoid crashing into him while going downhill.  Our saddlebags came apart because of our frequent falls and we had to reorganize using the only available light we had – from approaching cars and trucks.  People often honked their horns and flashed their lights at us, causing more spills into the roadside ditches.

At one point we decided to sleep in the forest but then we heard wolves howling. As we resumed riding, Avi prayed, “L-rd, if we die tonight, we’ll see You in heaven.” For awhile we walked our bikes, fearfully looking back for each approaching vehicle, wondering if we should jump in the ditch if they came too close to us. This went on for over 3 hours.  It was so difficult to keep our balance in the dark and we knew that we came very close to death.  Our children, Ari (14), Avi (10) and Eliana (8) were frightened and yet in a state of amazement at all that was going on.

Finally we arrived in a small village.  Lights!  Hotels!  All hotels were full except one had one room left – just for us!  How we praised the L-rd for this.  As I prayed before falling asleep, I asked the L-rd why, why did we have to endure such terror!

His answer?  “This is what it will be like when the hunters come.  Go home now.”  (Jeremiah 16:16)  Richard had originally wanted to go to Israel in August but the children and I were concerned about the escalating terror in Israel from the latest intifada, so we settled on going to a “safe” place.  Oh, by the way, the name of the town where we found rest and safety?  – Babylon.

Prague – August 13 – We awoke to pre WWII sirens – an eerie feeling.  We rode through the Jewish Quarter and viewed the river one last time. When we saw refrigerators and cars floating by in the river, we knew it was time to leave! There hadn’t been a flood of this magnitude in Prague for over 200 years.  We caught the last train out of town and shortly after we left, the water spilled over the riverbanks.  Thank G-d we got to ride out of town instead of floating out!  We really know how to choose our vacations!

Well, after these experiences, we knew that it was time to make Aliyah, to settle in Eretz Yisrael (The land of Israel). So we made Aliyah in 2003 and initially settled in Haifa on Mount Carmel.

Our Aliyah Mission

Heart of G-d Ministries is actively engaged in promoting Aliyah (the Biblical return of the Jewish people to Israel), and encouraging and equipping Christians to fulfill their Biblical calling toward the Jewish people.

G-d promises that after their return to the land, He would “sprinkle clean water” on them, give them “a new heart,” and put His Spirit within them (see, for example, Ezekiel 36:24-28).

Praise G-d for His faithfulness to His word! For the first time in centuries, the hearts of the Jewish people are beginning to open to an understanding of the restoration of Israel.

At the same time, G-d is opening the eyes of many Christians to understand their calling toward the Jewish people. Heart of G-d Ministries desires to encourage Christians to fully understand and actively participate in what G-d is doing in Israel.

FISHERMEN

Jeremiah 16:14-16 explains that G-d will first call for fishermen to fish His people home, and afterwards He will call for hunters to cause them to flee to Israel.  We believe G-d has called us to be fishermen.

During our trips to America, we’ve spoken with over 200 Jewish families about making Aliyah. Many have already come, and we are blessed to be able to help them and others who are answering the call to come home.

PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE IN THE LAND

It’s one thing for the Jewish people to come home to Israel.  It’s another thing for them to stay in the Land.  The culture, language, values, jobs, housing: everything is different from what we’re use to in America, making it exceedingly difficult to stay in the Land.

Because of this, the L-rd has also called us to help families who have made Aliyah, but are having a difficult time staying in the Land.  We have seen several instances where a father has lost his job and his family is in a crisis. They frequently consider going back to their former home. However, if they can receive help, it can literally make the difference between them having to go or being able to stay.

Establishing His people in His land is the only thing in all of scripture that G-d says He does with all His heart and all His soul!

It is our privilege to inspire Jewish families to return to their home and to assist them practically as they return.

“Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all My heart and with all My soul”

(Jer. 32:41)
